Surrogate Mother to 40 Orphans
Meet Esther, surrogate mother to 40 orphans at Maranatha and half dozen more at her own home in St. Marc. She is the loving director of 750 school children and staff at Maranatha. She can be quiet, but you better believe she is listening to every word. She can be involved in one thing, but she really does have eyes that see behind, around, above and below her when it involves the children and people of Maranatha.“Mother Hen” has been used to describe her more than once, and fits well. Be it cleanliness, truancy, tardiness, bed time, school work, supplies, manners, or hugs, Esther has it covered.

She understands much more than she will ever let on, however, she is very excited when the language gap can be bridged. She's a sport for us as we learn Creole and shows enthusiasm about learning English. Esther has loved the children of Maranatha always, in good times and bad. Esther is a constant for these kids and for the community. Always a firm, yet loving hand in the lives of so many children who otherwise have no hand at all, who otherwise would have no hugs at all, who otherwise would have no strength of direction, no support, no future and no family.

Esther is an advocate for the needs of Maranatha that she will discuss when the time is right, knowing full-well she won't get everything on her wish list, but she manages to make progress for the good of the children. She has a wonderful laugh, and can enjoy herself as evidenced by the “Hokey Pokey.” Esther is the glue that makes Maranatha a family.

The Maranatha Ministry is a partnership between Cornwall Church in Bellingham, WA and Maranatha, a community of faith in the Artibonite Valley in Haiti. Our mutual goal is to bring God’s love and hope to those in need by providing for their physical and spiritual needs as well as to create opportunities for education and employment. Our partnership currently ministers to an orphanage plus several schools and churches.
